Jamie Chung as Chi Chi

I loooooove the comics by Akira Toriyama. I have to say, the posters of the movie are a bit astonishing to me. Only Bulma looks ok. The other actors don’t look anything like the original characters in the comic…

Let us talk about Dragonball the comic and Chinese culture. As the Japan culture has been deeply influenced by China, the comic by Akira Toriyama also reflects this influence in many ways. The “dragon” in the title is actually the Chinese Long, not the western dragon. In the comic, the “dragon” is called “Shenron”, which is in fact the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word “Shen Long”, or “the Divine Long”.

The main characters in the beginning of Dragonball the comic are taken from the Chinese story “Journey to the West”. The story in the comic is totally original by Akira Toriyama, but some the characters are borrowed from China. San Goku is the Monkey King. Oolong is the Pigsy. And the Ox-King is … the Ox-King!

Comparison: photos of the TV series “Journey to the West” by CCTV and pictures from the official Dragonball website.
